Monday Morning

From a sugar loaded weekend with baked goodies, back to the gym and back on the treadmill. I cannot wait to get my sweat on this week in many work outs! I instructed a Spinning class this AM and it felt so right. Now I`m enjoying a plate of banana oatmeal porridge.

For this week I am hoping to get started on more weight training again, plus I wanna tackle a few runs outside.
I love how our bodies can just get right back into things when we set our hearts on it. Whether it is starting over with a work out routine, or simply adding a few activities that will help us feel healthy and well.
What are a few things you wanna do this week for your health?

I win..

...At the end of the day, this is what you wanna be able to say to yourself: Making the choice for a higher level lifestyle is worth it. Lance Armstrong once said: "pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever". We can apply this to many circumstances in life like training or cutting the rope on certain foods.
Here`s a little secret for you that gave me hope when a restricted diet was hard to deal with.
It`s easy to think that someone with a sensitivity to gluten (including people with celiacs) has a compromised immune system. That is absolutely wrong. The opposite is true! The immune system in people with celiac disease is working way harder to fight the "bad guys" like gluten.
Yey for having a great working immune system! ;)

Practically, what does it look like to "win". When you are faced with a challenge, you don`t have to take the easy turn that will feel good only in the next few moments. You can take the road less traveled.
In my spinning classes (which everyone in Redding should come and try by the way!) I challenge them to work through what feels impossible in the moment. We are on our bikes, headed up a steep hill and we can barely "see" the top. It`s heavy gear and our muscles are aching. Giving up seems like THE solution. Just take off the gear and quit. Or, keep working, keep looking to the top, and reap the benefits once you get there. In the end of the day you can stand in front of the mirror and say "I win". Maybe you had to say no to try those nachos your friend ordered at Logans Roadhouse, or say no to your other friends birthday cake that looked like heaven on earth. Its the choices in those moments that defines who you are. The kind of person I wanted to be was a healthy, vibrant, gorgeous, creative and exhilarating person who loved life and everyone around her.

One small choice at the time, one meal at the time, one day at the time will get us closer to where we want to be. Here are a few of my tips on how to stay gluten free on the GO

  • Choose your friends wisely - Spend "eating" time with people that are flexible, kind and maybe on the same road as you in a way or the other. Avoid people that are grossed out by salad and healthy choices. No joke, I have had to defend my diet so many times.
  • Choose restaurant wisely - opt for places that serve fresh produce, brown rice, corn tacos and salads. Mexican food works well.
  • Avoid foods like - french fries (they batter foods in bread and fry them in the same oil), meats/fish with sauces that might have gluten in it, pasta, pizza (BJ`s brewery offers GF and so does a few other places in bigger city's), chinese food (PF Chang`s has a GF menu, and it`s amazing too), sushi, Buffets are the worst.
  • Stop - going to McDonalds and those kinds of fast food places. You will never get a satisfying gluten free meal there.
  • Ask questions - don`t be afraid to have a conversation with your waiter about the food they serve - how it`s made, their work space and such.
  • Get familiar - with the farmers markets and health food stores where you live, the GF aisles and the GF, DF, no soy, eggs etc products. Even on your travels - inform yourself ahead of time on what the options are for food. For instance, I always know where the next Wholefoods is..
  • Snack! - I`ve said it before, but your gorgeous purses will come in handy for this one.. keep a bag of almonds, raw/GF bars, apples, bananas, tea bags (no joke), GF chocolate and airborne with you at all times.
It might seem weird to people that you have strong preferences when it comes to these thing. But stick to your plan and you will reach the goals you have set out to reach. In the end.. you win =)

What is Spinning?

Spinning is a work out class where you ride a stationary bike. The instructor will guide you through a road map that includes flat roads, mountains, down hill etc. A motivating group setting, energizing music and inspiring instructor make Spinning a really fun and effective work out.

The great thing about Spinning is that it can work for anyone. People at any fitness level can do this because you can go at your own pace by controlling the resistance on your Spinner bike. Listen to your body and adjust the resistance accordingly.

When working out with the Spinning program you train very effectively. Most classes are about 45- minutes long and you can burn up to 400-500 calories. The distance traveled depends on your cadence, but it usually ends up being at about 15-20 miles.

So regardless of how fit you are, you`ll get a great work out. Get on the bike, put some resistance on, and let the instructor guide you through a great work out!

If you live in the Redding area - come try a Spinning class at Everyday Fitness. My class is Saturday 10.15 AM. And starting Thursday the 20th of January, at 6PM. We also have classes every morning of the week. Come, check it out.

Hopes up!

This week has been incredible. I simply feel like jumping around with joy, in my one piece, all day long.

"You have permission to get your hopes up" -Danny Silk

That quote has been echoing over my head whenever my dreams seemed distant..
Pursuing a career as a fitness instructor has been a working project for a while. Many times I`ve wanted to quit, give up or just run away. But taking it one day at the time,  one goal ahead of me, I now find myself helping unique people reach their fitness goals.
This week for example, I got to sub the popular work out class "Briathlon" at my gym. As a first timer instructing a body sculpt class for well trained people, I was a little nervous. Very nervous actually. I cannot even tell you how many times I have attended fitness classes and envisioned myself as the instructor. And all of a sudden (not without a process of course) here it was... my first opportunity to instruct a class like that. If you ask me how it went, I might or might not have learned more what to not do. =) But the good news is that I did "good" and was asked to do it again tonight. WOOH

Some exercises I've done this week
  • assisted pull up
  • barbell bent over row
  • barbell side bent
  • cable seated row
  • abdominal reverse curl
  • bar crunch
I did 15 reps, then 10, then 5 with raising the weight every time. After a 20 sec. rest I would go back down same reps. The result... my muscles felt like jello. Love it!
I do miss going for long runs outside. It is just to cold.. But I am really enjoying keeping my focus on strength training. Every day I jump on a stationary bike and do Spinning intervals. They are great for  working on strength in leg muscles and to get the pulse going.

Breakfast! Oat meal is healthy fast food. Just add hot water. Boom.
Thank you for reading my post today, I hope your day is amazing and full of hope!
What could you be more hopeful about?

Do you schedule your work out?

Power - up the hill

These last three days have been busy!! I had a million of things to catch up on, Christmas gift shopping, laundry, home-cooked meals and finding the perfect color changing tree for our family photo shoot we did today. Done, done, done and done.

Here is the play list I used for my Spinning class this morning.... I called the profile "Power up the hill" - worked on strength as we climbed up 2 major hills, with a sprint in between.

You belong with me - Taylor Swift
Felt good on my lips - Tim McGraw
Need you now - Lady Antebellum
Put a girl in it - Brooks and Dunn
Clouds up - Air
Chrysalis - Dousk
I run to you - Lady Antebellum
Union House branch - Alisson Krauss
Mine - Taylor Swift
In between lines - The Album Leaf

It is good to mix it up a little when it comes to play lists for working out.. This one was fun an fitting to a slower work out, climbing those hills. Country music is so fun! =) Aaaaand here is me looking exhausted after the class...

Why do YOU work out?

Or, why don`t you? =) Getting yourself ready for a work out, can be extremely challenging. I know - believe me! Thoughts of denying that you need to do this, feeling like it`s taking too much time in your already busy schedule, sweating etc.  But then there`s the courage within you..  your passion for life, for the feeling of joy when you can say "today, I accomplished" - that drive just starts pulling through and rising to the challenge. Your preparing yourself mentally, and this one your gonna win. Leaving your head behind - you play this from your heart.....

"Workouts are like brushing my teeth; I don't think about them, I just do them.  The decision has already been made." - Patti Sue Plumer, U.S. Olympian.

This woman has records  in running from 20 years ago, that no one has been able to beat to this day.
A shift happens when you start training from you heart. Sounds like a cliche. But it`s true. So what does this mean? It means that the reasons for working out are other reasons then just fitting in to those jeans, or your vacation next month.Which, those are OK goals in themselves, but they are not lasting motivation! Training from your heart means being responsible for your health all life through. Sure I wanna look, and feel good now. But more then that is, I want to feel AWESOME when Im 40, when I`m 50. I want to be healthy and vibrant while my kids grow up. Or, I wanna be the grandma that has energy and life to give to her grandchildren!
Life will have it`s up`s and down`s - but you have the ability to choose whether it will be good or not! What I have learned through years of training is that I CAN. I got through that month of working out 3 days a week, 5AM till 7AM - I can do anything! Running that 6 mile run was hard, but if I can do that, I have established a basis for believing in myself to go through other things that are hard.
I value myself enough to create a lifestyle where I am my best. I`m not saying that working out hard everyday is for everyone. We all go through seasons in life where we have to modify our lifestyle to our environment. But as for me, I will always come back to the simplicity of my values.

Im writing this after having instructed 135 minutes of Spinning. I had my own 45 minute class, and then our gym hosted a Breast cancer awareness donation Bootcamp which lasted for 90 minutes. Anyways, I feel exhausted. But I also feel strong. I can. You can!!!!!!

These are some of our engagement photos,  taken by the incredibly talented photographer Renee Lawnsdown.

Pumpkin Patch!

Today has been SUCH a good day. It started out with me instructing a Spinning class at 5.15 AM, which is quit so early... but lucky me I just hurried home after the class, took a quick shower and got right back to bed. Woke up several hours later and went to Jamba Juice and Starbucks with Jeffrey, before we set out for errands all over town. The forecast for today and this whole week was rain, rain and more rain. But at 1PM the sun was shining so I went for another 5 mile/8Km run. Happiness!

This time every year we go pumpkin patching. For those of you that don`t know, a pumpkin patch is a field where pumpkins grow...It`s a Holiday festivity where you can have lots of fun, drink apple cider, eat kettle corn and other Harvest goodies. There`s usually several scarecrows, farm animals and little trains you can get on to tour the farm. We went with our good friends Becky and Derek. In this picture Im NOT sharing my popcorn with the little pony. sorry.

Becky and I found some cute mini pumpkins to decorate our homes with.....
 lots of big ones =)
He wanted a 33lb. pumpkin. Lots to carve later!
XOXO

how to get motivated for fitness

I have been active and healthy as long as I can live.. I started in the early years where my dad would take us (my sister and I) to the swim hall, go for bikerides or just long walks on Sunday afternoons. I found a huge appreciation for the sport called Handball (European), when I was 12. Later in my teens I discovered the gym. I was scared of it. Big men with massive arms, sweaty ladies and their unshaved legs.... thumbs down!! But there was something about finishing a work out that just felt good to me. I liked it. And now, I can check of pilates, running, hiking, climbing, weights, indoor cycling, swimming, fast walking, yoga, dancing and many many more things that we relate to work out that I have tested out, tried and failed, loved an hated.

At this point in my life working out is essential. I am 24, married I'm eager to stay fit, stay healthy and grow old strong! Some people look at it like this: I run for 45minutes today, and I will have to do it again, and again, and again. You can just feel the low motivation, low energy that is evolving around such an attitude. But then again, that might exactly be where the problem is! Low motivation for working out. "Why go to the gym and waste my time, when I could be hanging out m´with my boyfriend?", "I think I`d rather eat less...." "I hate sweating" You would be surprised by how normal that statement is!!

I personally LOVE working out. Love sweating, love running, love pushing myself, love drinking lots of water, love loud music to do cardio to. One time I just had to run, far, and did not give it much thought that it was over 100F/40C outside and only to get even warmer. I sat out for this loop around our lovely rivertrail in Redding, CA. Its exactly 5.8 miles, and counting a couple more as I ran from my house. It didnt take me long before I was very dehydrated and nearly feverish so that my body could deal with all the heath! I just pushed trough and did not have the funnest couple of days after it. Why? Because I had not been very smart. I didn't look ahead to plan what the outcome might be. But that how you learn. SO =) here it is: some pointers on how to have a succesful work out. Before and after and LOTS of fun!

1. Dream a little...or a lot!
It`s OK to want to be thinner, healthier, have a bouncier butt, run a marathon, or loose 10 pounds.
Be honest with yourself and DIG UP those dreams that so easily can get lost in all the business         around us. What do you need from yourself in order to be happy? Write it down, talk to a friend about it,
2. Throw out the trash!
Is there a pile of trash hindering you from reaching the door? It can be a negative experience, hurting friendships, a stressful job or a messy economy that is holding you back from reaching your goals. When you are ready to be real about achieving your goals, you do whatever takes to clean out your walk path so you can get anywhere. And that takes us to our next step...
3. Be proactive!
Don`t listen to anyone saying that "if it isn't more then 40 minutes on the treadmill a day then its not worth it. A 20 minute walk is better then nothing! 10 minutes of weightlifting in your living room is better then not doing it. Just do something. Get a new pair of running shoes, put on your favorite Natasha Bedingfield song and dance your heart out, watch The Biggest looser and get motivated. The hope here is that you start walking, moving in the direction of your dream by doing something. For the longest time I would go to Barnes and Nobles and just read trough all the fitness magazines I could find. I loved getting new work out ideas, seeing other peoples achievements etc. I longed for my own achievements one day but at least I was surrounding me with what I am passionate about.
4. Who`s your daddy!?
Are you surrounding yourself with people you wanna become like? It is absolutely vital for your future in health and fitness that you surround yourself with people that has gone the path your on. It might just be getting around a friend who goes to the gym weekly. Or, if you dream about becoming a swim teacher for kids, go find a place in your town that offers that and get to know the people in charge. It is the only way your gonna get better, is if you are around people that are better then you. Allot of people needs to stop thinking they can rely on themselves to achieve something they time after time have proven to fail. It`s OK to seek help from other people. =)
5. Plan it!
I know your busy and don't have time for anything else to be added to your schedule. But one way to get lots of stuff done, is to schedule your work outs, meals and maybe even laundry..
Smart successful people have an ability to look ahead and be realistic: If I go to bed at 10PM, I can wake up rested till about 6.30AM, go straight to the gym and have a great work out. Then head to the grocery store and stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. Make a nutritious smoothie that I'm drinking while I get started on laundry. Then I jump in the shower and get ready for the day and its only 9AM. Boom. Had I decided to go to bed at midnight, I would have needed to sleep till 9AM....
Just sayin =)
6. Play and have fun!
Not only for motvational purposes, but for so many more reason should you mix up your active playtime everyday. Go running outside in the park one day, take a zumba class the next, sign up for personal training twice a week, go for a swim at the lake or bike there... There is so many options for staying active and getting fit. It`s not OK to be bored in working out!

.......Hope this was helpful for someone.
Ill probably add more later.... But for now, I have to go and spend my time well. I have two days ahead full of Spinning fun so that I can become a Spinning instructor. WooooooP!!!;)
